SOLAR ACTIVITY

Two events jumped into the eye: a long duration M1.2-flare on June 13 and another one, an M1.9 on June 14. Both flares originated from the sunspot group 77 (NOAA active region 1504) which was located in the southern hemisphere near the central meridian on those days: S16E18 (June 13) and S17E06 (June 14). The 10 cm flux during the second M-flare peaked at a value of 1400 sfu! For comparison: the June 13 flare had a 10 cm flux of 260 sfu. Although 1400 sfu is not a record (The 2001-04-15 X14 flare had a flux of 48000 sfu, this is definitely HIGH), it is an indication that the associated coronal mass ejection (CME) is strong. The CME associated with the June 13 flare had a speed of around 500 km/s. We estimated the speed of the CME associated with the June 14 flare to be above 1000 km/s. This estimation was based on images of the CME taken by STEREO B/COR2. SOHO/LASCO C2 images of June 14 show a nice halo CME: the white plasma surrounded the occulting disk completely. A prest!
o-alert was sent as soon as more details about the CME came in.

GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY

In the night between June 11 and 12, we had to deal with a minor geomagnetic storm at the planetary level. The Earth crossed the sector boundary: the boundary between a region with the magnetic field pointing into one direction and a region with the magnetic field pointing into the opposite direction.
On June 16, a first shock passed ACE at the L1 point around 9:00UT. Around 20:30UT and 22:00UT, the total interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) increased once again in a sudden way. Shortly after 22:00UT, ACE encountered a plasma cloud. The plasma cloud is linked to the CME's that left on June 13 and 14. Both CME combined to one magnetic structure. This is CME-canibalism. The second faster CME overtook the first slower CME. It is unpredictable what the final speed of the mass could be at arrival at the Earth. It turned out that the speed of the CME measured by ACE at L1 was between 400 and 500 km/s. The second fast CME was considerably slowed down by bumping on the first slow CME. The north-south component rotated from +40nT to -20nT. The Earth magnetosphere responded on this encounter with a strong major magstorm at the planetary and local level (K and Kp became 6 on June 16 and 17).
