A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partially obscuring the image of the Sun for a viewer on Earth. An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon's apparent diameter is smaller than the Sun, causing the Sun to look like an annulus (ring), blocking most of the Sun's light. An annular eclipse appears as a partial eclipse over a region thousands of kilometres wide.



The annular phase will be visible from the Chinese coast, the south of Japan, and the western part of the United States and Canada. Guangzhou, Tokyo and Albuquerque will be on the central path. Its maximum will occur in the North Pacific, south of the Aleutian islands for 5 min and 46.3 s, and finish in the western United States.
It will be the first central eclipse of the 21st century in the continental USA, and also the first annular eclipse there since the solar eclipse of May 10, 1994 which was also the previous eclipse of this series Solar Saros 128.

Annular solar eclipse on May 20–21, 2012

The first solar eclipse in 2012 will be an annular solar eclipse on May 20–21. It is the first annular eclipse to be seen from the United States in 18 years and the first one to be visible from earth in more than 2 years.
The eclipse will also be seen from eastern Asia and the northern Pacific. It starts in Asia at 20:56 (8.56pm) Universal Time (UT) on May 20, 2012, and ends in the US at 02:49 (2.49am) UT on May 21, 2012.

This animation shows where the eclipse will be visible (white, gray and red shading) as well as day and night (dark “wave” slowly moving across the Earth's surface). In the red area the eclipse will be most visible. In its dark center, the moon will appear centrally in front of the sun, blocking all sunlight except for the bright rim of light that is characteristic for an annular solar eclipse. The gray and white shades indicate areas the sun will only be partly covered.

The Eclipse's Path


The dark strip in the center indicates the best locations for viewing the eclipse. Here the moon will appear in the center of the sun's disk. The eclipse will also be visible in the areas that are shaded red, but to a lesser degree. The fainter the red shading the less the sun will appear to be covered.

When will the eclipse occur?

The penumbral eclipse (P1) starts on the east of the International Date Line at 20:56:07 UT on May 20, 2012. The partial eclipse (U1) starts at 22:06:16 UT.
The total eclipse (U2) starts at 22:11:46 UT. The point of greatest eclipse occurs south of Kiska and Buldir in Alaska at 23:52:46 UT. It is visible for 5 minutes and 46 seconds in this area.
The total eclipse (U3) ends at 01:33:42 UT on May 21, 2012, followed by the end of the partial eclipse (U4) at 01:39:10 UT. The penumbral eclipse (P4) ends at 02:49:21 UT.

Solar poles to become quadrupolar in May

Magnetic field polarity at the solar poles will reverse and become quadrupolar in May, meaning positive fields will emerge in the North and South poles and negative fields will emerge on the equator, according to the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan and other institutes.
When a similar phenomenon occurred about 300 years ago, the Earth's average temperature fell slightly.



A research team led by Saku Tsuneta, a professor at the observatory, analyzed solar magnetic fields data using Hinode, an observational satellite, and confirmed that the polarity of the magnetic field at the North Pole began to reverse in July last year.



The researchers also found the magnetic field at the South Pole, which was expected to reverse along with the North Pole, maintained a positive polarity, ensuring the formation of a quadrupole magnetic field.


The cause behind the shifts in polar fields is not understood. However, it is known that the shifts coincide with the increase and decrease in the number of sunspots over an about 11-year cycle.



The current sunspot cycle has stretched for close to 13 years. A similar situation occurred in the 17th to 18th century, when the average temperature of the Northern Hemisphere decreased by 0.6 C. The research team believes the quadrupolar pattern also emerged at that time.
