    Posted on April 17, 2012

April 17, 2012RUSSIARussia’s northernmost active volcano is churning out ash to a height of 9,500 meters (over 31,000 feet) in the country’s Far East, local scientists reported on Tuesday.

The 3,283-meter (10,771-foot) Shiveluch volcano increased activity in May 2009 and has been periodically spewing ash from three to ten kilometers. “A powerful eruption of ashes took place 05.59 a.m. local time [17:59 GMT on Monday], a source at the Far Eastern Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said. The official said the column of ashes could be clearly seen from a distance of 40 kilometers spreading to the east. “It is the most powerful eruption this year,” the expert said.

According to scientists, the volcanic activity over the past two-three years has significantly altered the contour of the volcano with the crater increasing in size by 50% and the slopes becoming far steeper than before. Although the current eruption poses no immediate threat to nearby settlements, the ensuing ash fallouts could be hazardous to health and the environment. The clouds of volcanic ash could also pose threat to air traffic because the tiny particles cause problems with aircraft engine turbines.RIA Novosti

"We are on alert status [Level 3]," said National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho on Monday. "We ask that local disaster mitigation agencies follow the technical recommendations we have given them. There should be no community activity within a 2.5 kilometer radius of the volcano crater," Sutopo added. Mt Lokon is located on the outskirts of Tomohon. It is 1,580 meters high and is located 20 kilometers west from Manado, North Sulawesi. According to the Volcanic and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG), Mt Lokon had previously erupted on June 14, 2011, sending ash and debris 1,500 meters into the sky. The next day, another eruption occurred that threw up volcanic material by 600 meters. Two residents died as a result of these eruptions. Other eruptions happened in 1991 and 2001, with the one in October 1991 causing Rp 1 billion (US$108 thousand) in damages, as well as the death of a Swiss tourist named Vivian Clavel. The 2001 eruption covered Manado in ashes and debris. The dust coming out of the mountain formed a 400 meter pillar.

The explosion, characterized by its loud “cannon ball shot”, was immediately detected by locals and scientists observing the volcano’s progress. The explosion was later followed by a slight tremor and a constant pulsation of “high energy” said reports. The constant cloud coverage surrounding the volcano has caused scientists, from the Geophysical Institute branch of the National Polytechnic School to have trouble determining its current state. Most of the direct observations are conducted in the Guadalupe Observatory, the closest in the vicinity. Tungurahua, located in the Andes Mountains in Ecuador, is 5,016 meters high and its eruptions began in 1999. Since then, the volcano has transitioned from times of high activity and those of calm. However, Tungurahua is not the only volcano causing extreme damage and concern in the Hispanic world. Popocatépetl, located in Mexico City, has also been under close watch due to its recent activity which included ash blasts.

    Volcano Behind Atlantis Legend Re-Awakens

    Charles Q. Choi, OurAmazingPlanet Contributor - Apr 23, 2012 12:53 PM ET

The volcano that may have given rise to the legend of Atlantis has awakened, researchers say.
The cataclysmic eruptions at the Greek isle of Santorini about 3,600 years ago that spewed forth about 9.5 to 14.3 cubic miles (40 to 60 cubic kilometers) of lava devastated the ancient seafaring Minoan civilization, potentially inspiring the legend of the lost city of Atlantis. From the air, the resulting caldera, or volcanic crater, appears as a small cluster within the larger collection of Greek islands in the Aegean Sea.
Over the next four millennia, the largely underwater caldera at Santorini has experienced a series of smaller eruptions, with five such outbursts in the past 600 years, ending most recently in 1950. After a 60-year lull, Santorini awakened in January 2011 with a swarm of tremors, each magnitude 3.2 or less, new GPS research has revealed.

    ภูเขาไฟ Asphyxia (Mt. Curry) ที่หมู่เกาะ Sandwich ทางตอนใต้แอตแลนติค เริ่มปะทุขึ้นแล้ว

May 2, 2012SANDWICH ISLANDS A plume of volcanic smoke is seen rising from the appropriately-named Mount Asphyxia (Mt. Curry) volcano, located on Zavodovski Island in the southern Atlantic.

The image was acquired on April 27 by NASA’s Aqua satellite. Zavodovski is part of the South Sandwich Islands, a group of 11 British-owned islands located 217 miles southeast of South Georgia, off the tip of South America. Only 3.1 miles wide, the icy island is dominated by the 1,800-foot-high stratovolcano. Aptly named, the sulphuric fumes from Asphyxia coupled with the stench of penguin droppings — the island is a breeding ground for millions of chinstrap penguins — can be suffocating for human visitors. The plume is seen here snaking into upper-level winds where it takes a turn to the northwest. The other islands exhibit swirling cloud vortices on their lee sides, created by their disturbance of prevailing winds.Discovery News

Sumatra Faces Yet Another Risk: Major Volcanic Eruptions

ScienceDaily (May 16, 2012) — The early April earthquake of magnitude 8.6 that shook Sumatra was a grim reminder of the devastating earthquakes and tsunami that killed tens of thousands of people in 2004 and 2005.
    <hr style="border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; border-image: initial; border-top-width: 1px; border-top-style: solid; border-top-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); height: 0px; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; ">See Also:

Now a new study, funded by the National Science Foundation, shows that the residents of that region are at risk from yet another potentially deadly natural phenomenon -- major volcanic eruptions.

Researchers from Oregon State University working with colleagues in Indonesia have documented six major volcanic eruptions in Sumatra over the past 35,000 years -- most equaling or surpassing in explosive intensity the eruption of Washington's Mount St. Helens in 1980.

Results of the research have just been published in the Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research.

"Sumatra has a number of active and potentially explosive volcanoes and many show evidence of recent activity," said Morgan Salisbury, lead author on the study, who recently completed his doctoral studies in OSU's College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences. "Most of the eruptions are small, so little attention has been paid to the potential for a catastrophic eruption.

"But our study found some of the first evidence that the region has a much more explosive history than perhaps has been appreciated," he added.

Until this study, little was known about Sumatra's volcanic history -- in part because few western scientists have been allowed access to the region. The most visible evidence of recent volcanic activity among the estimated 33-35 potentially active volcanoes are their steep-sided cones and lack of vegetation, indicating at least some minor eruptive processes.

But in 2007, an expedition led by OSU's Chris Goldfinger was permitted into the region and the Oregon State researchers and their Indonesian colleagues set out to explore the earthquake history of the region by studying sediment cores from the Indian Ocean.

Funded by the National Science Foundation, it was the first research ship from the United States allowed into Indonesia/Sumatran waters in nearly 30 years.

While searching the deep-sea sediment cores for "turbidites" -- coarse gravel deposits that can act as a signature for earthquakes -- they noticed unmistakable evidence of volcanic ash and began conducting a parallel investigation into the region's volcanic history.

"The ash was located only in certain cores, so the activity was localized," said Adam Kent, a professor of geosciences at OSU and an author on the study. "Yet the eruptions still were capable of spreading the ash for 300 kilometers or more, which gave us an indication of how powerful the explosive activity might have been."

Salisbury and his colleagues found evidence of six major eruptions and estimated them to be at least from 3.0 to 5.0 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index. Mount St. Helens, by comparison, was 5.0.

The Indian Ocean region is certainly known to have a violent volcanic history. The 1883 eruption of Krakatoa between Sumatra and Java is perhaps the most violent volcanic explosion in recorded history, measuring 6.0 on the VEI and generating what many scientists believe to have been one of the loudest noises ever heard on Earth.

Sumatra's own Toba volcano exploded about 74,000 years ago, generating a major lake -- not unlike Oregon's own Crater Lake, but much larger. "It looks like a giant doughnut in the middle of Sumatra," said Jason "Jay" Patton, another OSU doctoral student and author on the study.

Sumatra's volcanoes occasionally belch some ash and smoke, and provide comparatively minor eruptions, but residents there may not be fully aware of the potential catastrophic nature of some of its resident volcanoes, Goldfinger said.

"Prior to 2004, the risk from a major earthquake were not widely appreciated except, perhaps, in some of the more rural areas," Goldfinger said. "And earthquakes happen more frequently than major volcanic eruptions. If it hasn't happened in recent memory…"

Kent said the next step in the research is to work with scientists from the region to collect ash and volcanic rock from the island's volcanoes, and then match their chemical signature to the ash they discovered in the sediment cores.

"Each volcano has a subtly different fingerprint," Kent said, "so if we can get the terrestrial data, we should be able to link the six major eruptions to individual volcanoes to determine the ones that provide the greatest risk factors."

In addition to the Oregon State University scientists, two Indonesian researchers were authors on the journal article: Yusuf Djadjadihardja and Udrekh Hanif, of the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology in Jakarta.

    จากภาพถ่ายดาวเทียมนาซ่า เผยให้เห็นภูเขาไฟ Bagana ที่ปาปัวนิวกินี ปะทุขึ้นแล้ว

May 18, 2012 PAPUA NGBagana volcano is one of the most active in Papua New Guinea, but it is remote, and so poorly monitored.

Located on the mountainous spine of Bougainville Island, it is both far from any cities or large towns and is hard to reach due to the rough terrain around it. Satellites are the best way for volcanologists to keep an eye on the active peak, which has an elevation of 5,741 feet (1,750 meters). A new lava flow was spotted on Bagana volcano by a NASA satellite on May 16. A large plume was also seen rising about the summit crater. The volcano emits gases (including water vapor and sulfur dioxide) almost continuously, and frequently spits up thick lava flows. ภูเขาไฟ Fuego ที่กัวเตมาลา เกิดระเบิดขึ้น ปะทุลาวาและควันเถ้าถ่านดำขนาดใหญ่ สั่งปิดสนามบินล่าสุด

May 19, 2012 GUATEMALAGuatemala’s Fuego volcano belched burning lava and black ash into the sky early Saturday, leading the government to issue an airplane advisory and close section of highway. The volcano, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) southwest of the capital, erupted about 2:45 a.m. (0745 GMT), spewing a column of ash up to 16,400 feet (5,000 meters) above the crater and launching burning red lava nearly 1,300 feet (400 meters) high. The national emergency commission issued an advisory, warning plane not to fly within a 25-mile (40 kilometer) radius of the volcano. The La Aurora international airport in Guatemala City remained open. The commission also closed two stretches of highway threatened by lava flows that reached the base of the mountain. Guatemala’s four active volcanoes have a history of causing shut downs. In 2010, an explosion at the Pacaya volcano about 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Guatemala City coated the city in a thick layer of black ash and rock, forcing hundreds of families to evacuate and closing the international airport. –Reuters

    อินโดนีเซียยกระดับการเตือนภูเขาไฟ Mt. Soputan เป็นระดับ 3-เตรียมความพร้อม หลังมีปฎิกริยาเพิ่มขึ้น

May 30. 2012INDONESIAThe Vulcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) has raised the alert status of Mt. Soputan in Minahasa and Southeast Minahasa regencies in North Sulawesi to level 3 — meaning “standby” — from the previous level 2 (alert), following increasing levels of volcanic activity.

“Based on our observations, as of 3 p.m. on Monday, Mt. Soputan’s alert status was raised to level 3,” center head Surono said on Monday evening. According to Surono, increasing activity had been detected since May 25, when the volcano spew out white smoke to heights of between 50 meters and 75 meters above the mountain’s peak. The center has recorded dozens of different types of activity since then. The center’s highest alert status for volcanoes is level 4 (on guard). Surono has called on local residents to stay beyond a radius of six kilometers from the volcano’s summit. The center has also warned residents of the threat of a cold lava flood, urging people living near Ranowangko, Pentu, Lawian and Popang rivers to remain alert and aware. The volcano’s last eruption occurred on July 3, 2011. It erupted 10 hours after its status was raised to alert, forcing local officials to close Sam Ratulangi Airport for a day. –Asia One
