On average, objects of that size are estimated to hit Earth about once every 1,000 years.
"From the information we have, we don't know of an asteroid that will threaten the population of the United States," Bolden said. "But if it's coming in three weeks, pray."
In addition to stepping up its monitoring efforts and building international partnerships, NASA is looking at developing technologies to divert an object that may be on a collision course with Earth.

"The odds of a near-Earth object strike causing massive casualties and destruction of infrastructure are very small, but the potential consequences of such an event are so large it makes sense to takes the risk seriously," Holdren said.

About 66 million years ago, an object 6 miles (10 km) in diameter is believed to have smashed into what is now the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, leading to the demise of the dinosaurs, as well as most plant and animal life on Earth.

The asteroid that exploded over Russia last month was the largest object to hit Earth's atmosphere since the 1908 Tunguska event when an asteroid or comet exploded over Siberia, leveling 80 million trees over more than 830 square miles (2,150 sq km).

Large asteroid heading to Earth? Pray, says NASA

(Reuters) - NASA chief Charles Bolden has advice on how to handle a large asteroid headed toward New York City: Pray.

That's about all the United States - or anyone for that matter - could do at this point about unknown asteroids and meteors that may be on a collision course with Earth, Bolden told lawmakers at a U.S. House of Representatives Science Committee hearing on Tuesday.

An asteroid estimated to be have been about 55 feet in diameter exploded on February 15 over Chelyabinsk, Russia, generating shock waves that shattered windows and damaged buildings. More than 1,500 people were injured.

Later that day, a larger, unrelated asteroid discovered last year passed about 17,200 miles from Earth, closer than the network of television and weather satellites that ring the planet.

The events "serve as evidence that we live in an active solar system with potentially hazardous objects passing through our neighborhood with surprising frequency," said Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson, a Texas Democrat.

"We were fortunate that the events of last month were simply an interesting coincidence rather than a catastrophe," said Committee Chairman Lamar Smith, a Texas Republican, who called the hearing to learn what is being done and how much money is needed to better protect the planet.

NASA has found and is tracking about 95 percent of the largest objects flying near Earth, those that are .62 miles or larger in diameter.

"An asteroid of that size, a kilometer or bigger, could plausibly end civilization," White House science advisor John Holdren told legislators at the same hearing.

But only about 10 percent of an estimated 10,000 potential "city-killer" asteroids, those with a diameter of about 165 feet have been found, Holdren added.

My name is Raymond I am a scientist working for various astronomy departments around the world, both public sectors and private sectors. I am not a conspiracy theorist, i am not one of those convinced that `the moon landing was faked` or `2012 nibiru would hit earth`. I look at facts.

However, a few weeks ago,an asteroid 18 meters wide exploded 40 miles above a Russian town, do you know what it would have done if it hit earth? It would have killed many thousands. The shockwaves of the explosion were recorded across the world thousands of miles away. This isnt a theory or assumption these are facts.Now this is what we have seen. The asteroid was part of a large body of similar objects coming in from the asteroid belt. There is one which we have not detected until now, because a/ we could not determine its exact projected path and b/ we did not want to scare people.

Exactly 2 hours later the faxes came through from our U.S observatory.

This object, half a mile wide is heading for earth and will hit Canada or Mexico in the next 7 days. Exact time and day will be added here later.

This will be an extinction level event. The blast itself will kill millions, and the rest of the living beings will be erased within a matter of motnhs

Even when i heard the news i did not believe it. I insisted on seeing a copy, and asked them to recalculate everything. The calculations were sadly correct.

So here i am, to tel you all that these final days are ones to be embraced. Tell the ones around you that you love them, pray to whichever God or higher faith you believe in. Please make ammends with enemies, and spread the love and warmth.

I am sorry. I really am.

Another newly discovered asteroid, 2013 ET.

This 330-foot-wide (100 meters) will miss Earth by 600,000 miles (960,000 kilometers) when it flys by on Saturday March 9 2013.
When asteroid 2013 ET passes Earth, it will be at a range equivalent to 2.5 times the distance between the planet and the moon, making it too faint and far away for most stargazers to spot in the night sky.

A newly discovered asteroid the size of a football field will cruise through Earth's neighborhood this weekend, just days after another space rock made an even closer approach to our planet.

The 330-foot-wide (100 meters) asteroid 2013 ET will miss Earth by 600,000 miles (960,000 kilometers) when it zips by on Saturday (March 9). The space rock flyby will come just days after the 33-foot (10 m) asteroid 2013 EC approached within 230,000 miles (370,000 km) of us early Monday (March 4).

When asteroid 2013 ET passes Earth, it will be at a range equivalent to 2.5 times the distance between the planet and the moon, making it too faint and far away for most stargazers to spot in the night sky. But the Virtual Telescope Project in Italy, run by astrophysicist Gianluca Masi, will webcast a live telescope view of the space rock's flyby on Friday (March 8), beginning at 2 p.m. EST (1900 GMT). There is no danger that 2013 ET will hit Earth, researchers say, just as 2013 EC posed no threat. But their flybys are slightly unsettling nonetheless, since both asteroids were discovered a mere few days ago.

Indeed, many space rocks are hurtling undetected through Earth's neck of the cosmic woods. Astronomers estimate that the number of near-Earth asteroids tops 1 million, but just 9,700 have been discovered to date.

Undetected objects can strike Earth without warning, as the surprise meteor explosion over Russia last month illustrated. The 55-foot (17 m) asteroid that caused the Feb. 15 Russian fireball detonated in the atmosphere before astronomers even knew it existed.

While many scientists stress the urgent need for expanded and improved asteroid-detection efforts, there is some good news: Humanity is unlikely to go the way of the dinosaurs anytime soon.

NASA researchers have identified and mapped the orbits of 95 percent of the 980 or so near-Earth asteroids at least 0.6 miles (1 km) wide, which could threaten human civilization if they hit us. None of these behemoths are on a collision course with Earth in the foreseeable future.

For comparison, the asteroid believed to have wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago likely measured about 6 miles (10 km) across, scientists say.

ที่เขียนมาแบบข้างบนในโพสท์ที่9 ก็เพราะหัวข้อกระทู้มันเรียกแขกมาก ใครจะมาเขียนเพิ่มเติมอะไรตอนหลังก็สุดแท้แต่ แต่ถ้าหัวข้อกระทู้มันคือ WarRoom ช่วยกันตามข่าว...ดาวเคราะห์น้อยขนาด 50 พุ่งชนโลก แล้วแถมเนื้อในมันมีคาดว่าจะเป็นอุกาบาตดวงโน้นดวงนี้ ก็ต้องไปสืบสาวราวเรื่องดูกัน

คนไทยอยู่ในนิวยอร์คมีตั้งแยะ นักเรียนไทยที่ไปเรียนหนังสือก็มีเป็นกะตั้ก หัวข้อกระทู้ขึ้นมาแบบนี้ เนื้อในอ่านผ่านๆก็คิดว่าจะชนนิวยอร์ค ก็เลยต้องเขียนมาให้เข้าใจกัน

เคยติดตามเรื่องนี้อยู่เหมือนกันคะ เหมือนเคยอ่านข่าวต่างประเทศบอกว่าปีนี้ทั้งหมดที่รู้ ทั้งเฉียดและฯลฯ จะเข้ามาทั้งหมดประมาณ 100,000 ลูก หรือหมื่นจำไม่ได้ รวมแล้วทั้งดาวเคราะห์น้อยและอุกาบาต (เดี๋ยวหาลิ๊งค์ข่าวก่อนนะคะ จะเอามาก้ข้อความปะที่ ไลน์นี้)
และน่าสนใจคือเขาบอกว่ามากกว่า 1,000 ลูก มีเส้นผ่าศูนย์กลางมากกว่า 1 กิโลเมตร

แล้วเราก็คิดเอาเองตามคนตกจริตว่า 1 แสนลูก ถ้าโอกาศเข้าชน มี 0.01% ก็จะต้องมีเข้ามาชนสัก 10 ลูกแน่ๆ

อ่า ... แล้วมีข้อมูลจากนาซ่าโผล่เกินมาจากลีสตลอด บอกว่าเดือนนี้มีกี่ลูกวันนั้น นี่ โน่น พอใกล้ถึงวันจริงๆ มีโผล่เพิ่มมาใหม่ตลอด คือเหมือนกับว่า เค้าเพิ่งมองเห็นตอนมันเข้ามาใกล้ๆ
และที่สังเกตอีกอย่างหนึ่ง กว่าร้อยละ 80 ของ ทั้งหมดที่จะเข้ามา เพิ่งค้นพบใน ปี สองปี มานี่เอง =.="
