[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]MAJOR X-FLARE + CME UPDATE: [/FONT] Earth-orbiting satellites have detected a long-duration X1.4-class solar flare coming from a new sunspot on the sun's eastern limb. The blast, which peaked at 1100 UT, produced a significant coronal mass ejection (CME). Using data from the SOHO-STEREO fleet of spacecraft, analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab have modeled the trajectory of the CME and concluded that the body of the cloud will not hit Earth. A minor glancing encounter with the outskirts of the CME is, however, possible on Sept. 25th. [CME: movie, forecast track]

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]UARS RE-ENTRY UPDATE: [/FONT] NASA's UARS satellite is making its last orbits around Earth. Orbital elements published today by the US Strategic Command suggest that re-entry could occur during the early hours of Saturday morning. "For now, it looks like 00:00 - 04:00 UTC on Sept. 24," says satellite tracking expert Ted Molczan, "but it could well happen even later. UARS will pass over North America and Europe several times during this period, but it will spend most of its time over oceans and sparsely populated land." The Federal Aviation Administration has issued the following Notice to Airmen (NOTAM): "Aircraft are advised that a potential haard may occur due to reentry of satellite UARS into Earth's atmosphere. FAA is working with the Department of Defense and NASA to ensure the most current re-entry information is provided to operators as quickly as possible. Further NOTAMS will be issued if specific information becomes available indicating a United States airspace impact. It is critical that all pilots/flight crew members report any fallinf space debris to the appropriate ATC facility. UARS UPDATE: NASA's bus-sized UARS satellite has returned to Earth. There are still no visual reports of the fireball. US Strategic Command believes that UARS re-entered the atmosphere at 04:16 UTC +/- 53 minutes while the satellite was ascending over the Pacific Ocean near coordinates 30.9° N, 218.9°E. A NASA statement echoes these findings.

M7.4 Solar Flare: The Solar Flares just keep on coming. This time Sunspot 1302 churned out an M7.4 Solar Flare at 04:50 UTC Sunday morning. I created another presentation below showing the solar flare in progress as captured by the Solar X-Rays, EVE and SDO. Continue to monitor the Solar X-Rays for further activity on Sunday.



Long Duration M-Class Flare + Bright CME:
Another strong Solar Flare reaching M7.1took place on Saturday after the initial X-Class flare yesterday and was very long in duration. A bright Full-Halo CME is included with this event and a portion of this cloud may be earth directed.

Solar Update: Solar activity has been strong over the past 72 hours with numerous M-Class flares as well as two X-Class flares around Sunspot 1302. The chances for an Earth directed Coronal Mass Ejection are increasing.


New Sunspot 1303 located in the southern hemisphere is also capable of

producing M-Class flares. This region will soon rotate onto the western limb and out of direct earth view
More Flare activity will be possible within the next 24 hours.


Solar Flux 190: With all the solar activity taking place on Saturday, the official Solar Flux for Sept. 24 is 190. This will stand as a new Cycle 24 record, despite being flare enhanced. The final flux reading for the day was 168.7.

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]SOLAR STATIC: [/FONT]Active sunspot 1302 has turned the sun into a shortwave radio transmitter. Shock waves rippling from the sunspot's exploding magnetic canopy excite plasma oscillations in the sun's atmosphere. The result is bursts of static that may be heard in the loudspeakers of shortwave radios on Earth. Amateur radio astronomer Thomas Ashcraft recorded this sample from his backyard observatory in New Mexico on Sept. 24th:

"Saturday was a super-strong solar day with near continuous flaring and radio sweeps," says Ashcraft. "The sound file (above) corresponds to an M3 flare at 1918 UTC. It was the strongest radio sweep of the observing day."​

"Try listening to the radio bursts in stereo," he advises. "I was recording on two separate radios at 21.1 MHz and 21.9 MHz, and I put each one into its own channel of the audio file. This gives a spatial dimension as the bursts sweep down in frequency."
